  • CHENNAI: People should take simple steps to avoid renal ailments, said doctors who attended a programme conducted on the eve of World Kidney Day on Wednesday.

March 13 is observed as the World Kidney Day.

With the theme 'Kidneys age just like you, take care of them, and talk to your doctor', a programme was organized by Sapiens Health Foundation in Chennai to create awareness on the prevention of kidney diseases.

People should reduce salt intake and increase water intake with ageing as kidneys lose the ability to excrete salt and conserve water with age, said nephrologist Dr Rajan Ravichandran, the chairman of Sapiens Health Foundation.

"The functioning of the kidneys reduce with age by 1% every year. The weight of the kidneys reduce by 25%, there could be formation of cysts and other microscopic changes. With co-existing diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, ageing also becomes faster," said the doctor.

As the water and salt handling capacity of the kidney reduces with age, people should drink more water to improve the concentration capacity of the kidney, said Dr Ravichandran.

Chairperson of Adyar Cancer Institute Dr V Shanta was the chief guest at the event. "Most of the diseases occur due to lifestyle-related factors. Tobacco and alcohol are the major risk factors for diseases like cancer, cardio and renal diseases. There is no need of sophisticated diagnosis and treatment in future if people take measures to prevent such diseases," said Dr Shanta.
