Nigeria’s
National Operator, Globacom has stated that its active support for
Nigeria’s centenary commemoration is consistent with its commitment to
promoting the values that unite and sustain the country.
The national carrier, which is a Foundation Partner and Platinum
Sponsor of the centenary project, stated this as the activities
commemorating the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern
protectorates of Nigeria into one country in 1914, reach a climax.
Globacom’s Group Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Mohamed Jameel, said:
“Globacom is a wholly indigenous company that is committed to promoting
unity, growth and development of Nigeria. We share the vision of the
country to become one of the top 20 economies of the world by the year
2020, and we believe that this is achievable only through unity, which
is reinforced by celebrating the ties that hold the country together.”
According to him, the centenary anniversary of the creation of the
entity called Nigeria presents a unique opportunity for the country to
celebrate the common values uniting the nation in spite of its rich
cultural diversity.
Some of these values, according to him, include diligence,
integrity, resourcefulness, love, faith and hope for a brighter and
greater future.
“Our chairman, Dr. Mike Adenuga is particularly passionate about
Nigeria, and this passion has been a strong propelling force for
executing the commitment we made to the organisers of the centenary
project,” said Jameel.
It would be recalled that Dr. Adenuga was among the personalities
singled out for recognition by President Goodluck Jonathan for their
immense contributions towards the success of the launch of the centenary
project in February 2013.
Mr. Jameel said Globacom is convinced of a greater future for
Nigeria, adding that this informed the company’s sponsorship of a
television mini movie which gives a sneak preview of the great future
awaiting the country, and which inspires everyone to strive for the
nation’s greatness.
The mini movie, which features children articulating the
achievements of the country in the last 100 years and where the country
hopes to be in future, was one of the highpoints of the official
flag-off of the centenary celebrations in February last year.
Mr. Jameel said Globacom would continue its aggressive investment
drive in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, with a view to engendering
sustainable development and improve the lives of Nigerians.
“As a responsible corporate citizen of Nigeria, we believe that we
have a role to play in making the country great,” said Mr. Jameel
