A
police officer in Ogun State on Thursday shot and killed seven people
including his wife, a two-year-old toddler, and himself, the police have
confirmed.
Police Corporal Sunkanmi Ogunbiyi, attached to State
Criminal Investigation Department of the Ogun State Police Command, went
berserk on Thursday morning in Abeokuta.
The rampaging policeman
was said to be having matrimonial problems with Oluwatosin, his wife,
who is also a police corporal attached to Obantoko police station in
Abeokuta, the Ogun capital.
According to neighbours, following a
quarrel between the couple, Oluwatosin moved, alongside their two
children, to the house of a neighbour, their landlady.
Witnesses
said Mr. Ogunbiyi arrived the landlady’s residence at about 7:02 a.m.
and immediately opened fire on his wife. He also shot and killed the
landlady, a 2-year-old toddler, and three others. He did not shoot at
his children, who were also in the house.
Three other tenants also
sustained gunshot injuries during the incident which occurred at 67,
Ifelodun Street, Akingbala area of Obantoko, Abeokuta. The injured were
rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, where they are
now receiving treatment.
Some neighbours told PREMIUM TIMES that
the police corporal had in the past warned the landlady not to harbour
his wife and children whenever the couple had any misunderstanding.
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, later visited the scene to assess the situation.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, in a statement, confirmed the incident.
He said that Mr. Ogunbiyi and his wife had been having ‘domestic conflicts’ before Thursday’s killings.
“The
Ogun State Police Command has deemed it necessary to react to the
killing of six persons by a police Corporal Sunkanmi Ogunbiyi attached
to the Ogun State Police Command,” the spokesperson said in the
statement.
“The unfortunate incident occurred this morning
Thursday 27th March, 2014 at 0758hrs when the said corporal, who had
been having domestic conflicts with his wife, shot and killed six
persons, with his rifle, including his wife, Woman Corporal Oluwatosin
Faremi, the landlady in the house, a two-year-old baby girl and two
males and one female, while another three persons sustained injuries and
receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta.
The said corporal, having killed these persons, shot himself dead
immediately.
“The Commissioner of Police Ogun State, CP Ikemefuna
Okoye has described the incident as unfortunate; and has visited the
scene with other senior police officers in the command to assess the
situation and sympathize with the relations of the deceased and members
of the Akingbala Ifelodun Estate, Eleweran Area, Abeokuta, where the
incident took place,” he added.
Mr. Adejobi said “The Command has
therefore commenced thorough forensic investigation into the killing and
promised to make sure justice is done in the matter.”
“The
commissioner of police however appeals to the general public to perceive
the incident as one of the unfortunate social mishaps and not to judge
the police with the incident, as the police is committed to protection
of lives and property and will not tolerate any act capable of trampling
on fundamental human rights of the citizens of Ogun State.”

Mar 25, 2014; Miami, FL, USA; Serena Williams hits a forehand against Angelique Kerber (not pictured) …
By Steve Keating
MIAMI (Reuters) - Defending champion Serena Williams closed in on a seventh Sony Open title with a 6-2 6-2 quarter-final demolition of German Angelique Kerber on Tuesday, a win that came as the Crandon Park tennis facility was locked down due to a bomb scare.
Williams' win sets up a semi-final rematch of last year's final against Maria Sharapova, a five-time runner-up on the Miami hardcourts, who advanced with an equally impressive 7-5 6-1 win over eighth-seeded Czech Petra Kvitova.
While Williams was shutting down fifth seed Kerber, Miami Dade police
were locking down the sprawling tennis complex after a suspicious
package was found at the main entrance.
Four lane traffic was
halted in both directions in front of the complex while spectators were
prevented from entering or leaving the facility.
"Yeah, there was a bomb threat and a lockdown but that's all I know about it. Scary," said Williams.
Sharapova and Williams, who have both achieved a career grand slam and
held the number one ranking, were expected to develop into one of the
great rivalries in women's tennis.
But it has not quite worked
out that way with Williams dominating the series, winning 15-of-17
career meetings including the last 14.
Mar 25, 2014; Miami, FL, USA; Serena Williams hits a forehand against Angelique Kerber (not pictured …
The pair have clashed three times in Miami, Williams winning all three.
"It's no secret that she's been a big challenge of mine, an opponent
that obviously I would love to beat," said Sharapova, who has not beaten
Williams in almost a decade.
"There are certainly ways that I need to step up in certain situations that I haven't been able to do in the past against her.
"But it's great that I have come to that stage and have the opportunity to play her again."
Certainly Sharapova will have to be at her best as Williams' title defense has picked up steam with each match.
The world number one needed just 62 minutes to dispose of Kerber and has dropped one set on route to the final four.
"When you're playing champions, you have to play your best," said
Williams, looking ahead to her meeting with Sharapova. "She always plays
her best and her heart out against me.
"We just have to bring
the best because we both are really good players. We just both do the
best we can when we try to play each other.
"I love playing her. I really do."
Sharapova, who has come up short in the Miami final each of the last
three years, dropped her opening serve to Kvitova but that would be the
only time in the entire match.
The fourth-seeded Russian took
control with a break to get back on level terms at 4-4 and then again to
close out the first set. Sharapova then dominated the second set,
storming through the first five games before a reeling Kvitova held her
serve.
"I didn't have a good first few games, so I was happy that
I was steady, that I kept trying to do the right thing, kept trying to
be aggressive," said Sharapova. "I think that paid off as the match went
on because I made a few too many unforced errors in the beginning."

A man feigning to be mad was apprehended along Ring Road in
Ibadan town by residents of the area who found human tongue and
dangerous weapons on him.
Vanguard reports that his evil act was exposed
when his hidden blackberry phone suddenly rang in public which aroused
suspicion. He was immediately surrounded and searched. They allegedly
found the human tongue, a cutlass and axe on him. The mob that gathered
had attempted to carry out jungle justice on him but
for the timely intervention of the police, who took him away.
This incident comes barely four days after the Ibadan house of horror was discovered.
Star artiste and Dem Mama Records boss, Timaya, still does not feel okay about Patoranking’s exit from his label.
The 'Ukwu' crooner revealed this to TheNET at the Star Music Trek 2014 unveiling on March 19, 2014, Wednesday.
When asked about his relationship with Patoranking, Timaya got a bit nervous and replied:
“Am bigger than one guy level, I
don’t want to leave my career to push his career, he is on another p, I
put him somewhere else, I don’t have issues with Patoranking, I handled
him first, paid for his Alubarika’s video”.
The popular singer further revealed that his collaboration with Sean
Paul on Watta Bam Bam remix, which was shot three weeks ago in Miami US,
would be dropping mid-week.
It would be recalled that
Patoranking hooked up with Timaya in 2012 and is believed to have signed
with Dem Mama Records. He also began working with the label’s manager
Prince Oluzor.
In the middle of last year, Dem Mama Records
released Patoranking’s official debut single titled “Alubarika” and,
shortly, dropped a video for it in August. It has been quite successful
in Nigeria and Malaysia.
The sources of funding Patoranking’s project were unclear.
The 'Ukwu' singer has been reportedly surprised by Patoranking’s move to ditch the label in January 2014.
The rising artiste just ignores Timaya’s attempts to contact him
According
to TheNET, Patoranking now associates with a new label FOSTON MUSIK,
which released his new single “Girlie O” in February 2014.
''I see arrogance. I see harrasement. I see it's either our
way or no way by the same group who felt the country belongs to them
only- the people who are holding this country by the jugular at this
conference. The
same way they have been behaving since the creation of the Nigerian
state is the same way they are aggressively exhibiting their character
at this confrence.
But gone are the days when any part of Nigeria
can be intimidated, can be coerced or harrassed into submission. The
majority of Nigerian s have realised that 50 years of their domination,
albiet illegally, has come to an end.
They must sit down now and
discuss. The odds are not in their favour. The threat of boycott or
walkout will not change anything. We are all equal before the law. We
are all equal before God''- ADEKUNLE ADESINA ODUNMORAYO.
Chief
Odunmorayo's words shall go down in history as being a prophetic and
final warning to a people that have lost touch with reality and that
feel that they must always have their way in Nigeria.
The message
is loud and clear and it basically says that there are no more slaves
and slave-masters in Nigeria. It says that we are all equal before God
and we will never go back to the old days of northern masters and
southern serfs.
If the north walks out of the conference simply
because they are not allowed to operate what amounts to an effective
power of veto when it comes to voting, then they may as well walk out of
Nigeria as well.
And if they do so, to hell with them. It is time
for the south to begin to come together and insist on their rights.
Some things are way and above party politics and they are basic and
fundamental- this matter is one of such things.
The north does not
own Nigeria and the rest of us do not live for them or at their beck
and call. We all own this country and the wishes of the north cannot be
forced down the throats of the south. READ MORE: http://news.naij.com/62893.html
The Arsenal squad have more or less been in social media lockdown ever since they were thrashed 6-0 at Chelsea on Saturday.
Pictures have emerged this evening however, on social media,
suggesting that the Arsenal players went out celebrating over the
weekend, despite their embarrassing loss at Stamford Bridge.
This could well be a touchy subject in the lead-up to Arsenal’s
Premier League match with Swansea on Tuesday night as the Gunners look
to bounce back.
Mesut Ozil’s girlfriend, Mandy Capristo, celebrated her 24th birthday
on Friday – however there is no way the likes of Per Mertesacker and
Bacary Sagna would have been able to go out the night before such a big
lunchtime game.
From all evidence on social media, it looks like much of the Arsenal
squad (including Per Mertesacker and Bacary Sagna – who both started at
Chelsea) went out on Saturday night to celebrate the birthday of Mandy
Capristo.
Also featuring in the picture posted on Instagram by Mandy Capristo on Monday night, are Mesut Ozil and Nicklas Bendtner.
Capristo thanked all her friends for an “unforgettable evening” with
the hashtag #thegracegatsby – indicating the theme of what looks like a
fun party.
Above is the picture Mandy Capristo posted this evening.
Below is another picture posted by Capristo, followed by a picture
from Bacary Sagna’s wife Ludivine and a Tweet suggesting the party was
on Saturday night, just hours after Arsenal lost 6-0 at Chelsea.
Ludivine Sagna posted her picture on Friday, with the message: “can’t
wait for the bday party” – suggesting it could only have been the night
before the Chelsea game, or over the weekend.
The Tweet below, from one of the attendees, was posted on Saturday evening.
Finally, Mesut Ozil posted the same birthday picture as his
girlfriend onto Facebook and has received plenty of abuse from Arsenal
fans…
One such comment on Ozil’s Facebook page, says: “Nice to see someone
is having fun after we lost 6 nil . I would recommend whoever you pay to
manage your social media takes a break for a while ! And if you do it
yourself you need a better advisor !!!”
Presuming Arsenal players were not out on Friday night, this party could only have taken place on Saturday or Sunday.
And, in the Arsenal players’ defence, they should be allowed to celebrate birthdays regardless of what happens on the pitch.
Although some Gunners may not feel this way…

she was told she had a very rare form of cancer, and it was terminal.
Kate was such a strong person, she wouldn’t let us cry. She just set

Super Eagles head coach, Stephen Keshi has revealed why he
accepted to recall Stoke City attacker, Peter Odemwingie to the national
team as the team continue its preparation for the 2014 World Cup
holding in Brazil.
* Keshi and Osaze have buried the hatchet
While
speaking on Tuesday during the media launch of the TomTom Go To Brasil
national consumer promo/Editors' roundtable, Keshi stated that
Odemwingie has apologised to him for his outbursts after he was excluded
from Nigeria’s squad for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.
Keshi
said: "Me and Osaze (Peter) have been speaking all the while when it was
reported that we had issues. There was never any problem between us. It
was the same thing with (Super Eagles captain), Joseph Yobo.
“It was just the media reporting that I had problems with Osaze and Yobo when we never had any problems at all.
“He
(Odemwingie) has apologised to all Nigerians (who were hurt by his
remarks on Twitter). He also said sorry to me. I have no problems with
him. Everything is fine."
It could be recalled that the
32-year-old took to social networking site Twitter to voice his
sentiments, criticising Keshi after it became clear he would not be
going to South Africa for the 2013 Afcon with the Super Eagles.
The Nassarawa Police Command, Tuesday, arrested the Nassarawa State
Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Innocent Lagi, for
scaling the fence of the State House of Assembly to serve a court order.
Lagi was at the Assembly to serve the officials with a court
injunction restraining the House from summoning the chairman of Nasarawa
State Independent Electoral Commission, NASIEC, and his commissioners
to appear before them.
However, the News Agency of Nigeria, reported that he was not allowed to enter the premises by the security officers.
The Attorney-General, after being denied access to the complex,
decided to jump over the fence, which prompted the legislators to order
security officials to arrest him.
It was also reported that before Lagi arrived at the Assembly
complex, the Chairman of the commission, Dr. Abdullahi Modibo, and five
other commissioners had already responded to questions raised by members
on the conduct of the exercise.
The Senate has confirmed Godwin Emefiele as the next Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.
Mr. Emefiele will resume in June when the tenure of the suspended Central Bank Governor, Lamido Sanusi, expires.
The Senate’s confirmation of Mr. Emefiele on Wednesday follows his
nomination by President Goodluck Jonathan in February. The president
nominated Mr. Emefiele, current Managing Director of Zenith Bank, as the
new CBN boss hours after suspending Mr. Sanusi in February. Mr. Sanusi
was suspended for alleged financial recklessness although many believe
his suspension is due to his exposure of corruption in the petroleum
industry.
Below is Mr. Emefiele’s profile as published on Zenith Bank’s website.
“He is the Group Managing Director, Zenith Bank Plc, a position he
has held since August 2010. Until then he was the Deputy Managing
Director of the bank, having been appointed into that position in 2001.
Emefiele has been on the bank’s management team since inception and has
held various management positions in the bank, including serving as the
Bank’s Executive Director in charge of Corporate Banking, Treasury,
Financial Control and Strategic Planning.
“Until he took over as Group Managing Director, Emefiele was directly
responsible for all the Group’s local subsidiaries, Treasury and
Correspondent Banking, and Multilateral, Conglomerates, & Private
Banking. He also had responsibilities for direct supervision of majority
of the bank’s branches in Lagos and Northern Nigeria.
“Emefiele has over twenty-six (26) years banking experience and holds
a B.Sc and an MBA in Finance both from the University of Nigeria
Nsukka. Before commencing his banking career, he lectured Finance, Bank
Management, and Insurance at the University of Nigeria and University of
Port Harcourt respectively.
“He is an alumnus of Stanford University, Harvard and Wharton
Graduate School of Business where he took courses in Negotiation,
Service Excellence, Critical Thinking, Leading Change and Strategy.
“Under Emefiele’s leadership, Zenith Bank has strengthened its
position as a leading financial institution in Africa, winning
recognition and getting endorsement at home and abroad for giant strides
in key performance areas like corporate governance, service delivery
and deployment of cutting-edge ICT as well as impact in the bank’s
numerous spheres of operations.
“In 2012, Emefiele’s visionary leadership saw Zenith Bank receiving
acclaim from reputable institutions such as world finance, CFI and FTSE
Global Markets that have named Zenith the Best in Corporate Governance,
Best Commercial Bank in Africa, and Emerging Global Super brand
respectively.”
