Cop declared brain dead after blaze set by ‘bored teen’
The family of Officer Dennis Guerra (inset) wept today
after the officer was declared brain dead. Marcell Dockery told cops he
was "bored" when he set the blaze that injured Guerra and his partner.

Officer Dennis Guerra remains on life support at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx, where he was transferred after doctors struggled to stabilize him at Coney Island Hospital and Jacobi Hospital.
Family members wept outside an intensive care unit in a hallway crawling with concerned cops and a police department chaplain.
Guerra, 38, a married father of four, and his partner, Rosa Rodriguez, 36, were the first two on the scene of a fire in a Coney Island apartment building, where they were immediately overcome by dense smoke as they stepped off an elevator into a 13th-floor hallway where a mattress had been set on fire.
Rodriguez was in critical condition at Cornell Medical Center’s burn unit in Manhattan, where she was placed in a hyperbaric chamber.
After the accused arsonist, Marcell Dockery, 16, told investigators he was “bored,” according to sources, he was caught on camera with a wide grin as he was walked from a Brooklyn precinct, a gesture that outraged cops and Guerra’s heartbroken family.
“We saw him smiling on TV, is this a joke? We are going through so much right now,”said Guerra’s mother, Miriam, outside her home before rushing off to the hospital as Guerra’s condition worsened.
“This is a very tough time for us. Because he was bored, two officers are now fighting for their lives, and one of them is my son,” she said.
Dockery — who set up an entire Facebook page devoted to his “obsession’’ with fire — was charged with felony arson and assault and reckless endangerment.
Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner Bill Bratton visited Guerra’s family at the hospital.
“The tragedy here is that a 16-year-old young man would not have common sense enough to understand the implications of lighting a mattress, as has been alleged, on fire in his own building,” Bratton said before the hospital visit.
“How can any of us make any sense out of that?”
De Blasio saluted Guerra and Rodriguez for their bravery.
“We have such respect for what they have done for this city,” de Blasio said. “We feel for their families as they go through this terrible time, but we know that these two officers did what they did because people were in danger and they answered the call.”
New possible sound detected in hunt for lost jet
An Australian aircraft hunting for the missing Malaysian jet picked up a
new possible underwater signal on Thursday in the same area search
crews previously detected sounds that were consistent with an aircraft's
black boxes.
The Australian
navy P-3 Orion, which has been dropping sound-locating buoys into the
water near where the original sounds were heard, picked up a "possible
signal" that may be from a man-made source, said Angus Houston, who is
coordinating the search off Australia's west coast.
"The acoustic data will require further analysis overnight," Houston said in a statement.
If
confirmed, this would be the fifth underwater signal detected in the
hunt for Flight 370, which vanished on March 8 while flying from Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing, with 239 people aboard.
On
Tuesday, the Australian vessel Ocean Shield picked up two underwater
sounds, and an analysis of two other sounds detected in the same general
area on Saturday showed they were consistent with a plane's flight
recorders, or "black boxes."
The Australian navy has been dropping buoys from planes in a pattern near where the Ocean Shield's signals were heard.

Femi Fani Kayode Finally Speaks On His Alleged Move To Leave APC
According to reports, Fani Kayode, one of the fiercest critics of President Goodluck Jonathan, visited the Presidential Villa on Tuesday where he held discussions with the President.
Speaking after the meeting at Aso Rock, Fani-Kayode told newsmen at the state House that every Nigerian who feel strongly about an issue should be able to discuss with the president about it.
* Fani-Kayode says he would tell Nigerians if he is leaving APC
“This is a presidential villa, the president is a president of Nigeria every single person in this country that is a Nigerian is entitled to come here from time to time, when the doors are open to come and pay their respect to the wonderful people that are here. As a Nigerian, I have done that today and I’m delighted to be here.
“I have always believed that every Nigerian regardless of the side of the political divide they belong, and as a Nigerian myself I have believed that we disagree on an issue from time to time. The most important thing is for us to be able to resolve these issues come together to move this country forward. And I think every right thinking responsible person should be able to do that. They should also be able to come to the villa from time to time to see how they can help to move the country forward."
Speaking on his alleged move to dump APC and join PDP, Fani-Kayode said: “The step that I will take will be made known to Nigerians at the right time. The most important thing is that I cannot and I will not be associated with a situation whereby any group of people is promoting a religion above another. I think all of us have gone past the stage of religious politics in this country. We must treat the Muslim community with utmost respect and we must treat the Christian community in the same way and even the non-religious."

'You Came and Saw and Conquered' - Read Jim Iyke's Touching Tribute to his Late Mum
The loss of a mum, never an easy one to bear and Jim is in that situation right now. His mum, Mrs Ngozi Gladys Okelue Esomugha, who was born on May 3, 1947, succumbed to a long battle with illness on Monday, March 24, 2014. She was aged 67 and here's his son's touching tribute to her.
She was a force of nature. My big sis, my 1st wife, my confidante, my rock, my critique, my greatest fan and regal leader. She was a radiant, gorgeous woman with a smile bigger than the sun and always ready to embrace anyone for all the good and even wrong reasons.
My sun is gone. The dull numbing ache in my heart will never be pacified by any woman
alive. Not my lover, sisters nor even a daughter I may one day bear. The relationship of a mother and an only son is uniquely eternal and spiritual, transcending human comprehension. Mine with Gladys is even far strangely beyond that.
They say it’s a blessing if a son buries his mother and not the other way around. I'm not sure they’re entirely right. They also said one never recovers from the loss of their mother. I hope they are right! May I never recover from the memories of your celestial love, sacrifices, warmth, your contagious laughter and merciless wit.
Your enthusiasm for life and service of others was infectious. I’ll miss you each and every waking moment of my life. I know you're in a better place now.
I’ll carry on everything you stood for ‘til my last days. You came and saw and conquered.
Adieu Gladys from your boy Jim. I love you till the last breathe I take.Meanwhile, the family is yet to announce the funeral rites.
Jonathan Fleming, convicted in killing despite vacation alibi, freed after 24 years
Disney alibi frees man after 24 years
- Jonathan Fleming, 51, was released from prison after nearly 25 years
- Fleming was wrongly convicted in 1989 for the slaying of Darryl Rush
- Fleming has always maintained he was on a family trip in Florida at the time
- A review of his case by the DA's Conviction Review Unit exonerated him
Jonathan Fleming, 51, was
found guilty in 1989 in the death of Darryl Rush in the Williamsburg
neighborhood of Brooklyn and served the next 24 years and 8 months in
prison, according to the Kings County district attorney's office. He was
released Tuesday afternoon.
Fleming has always
maintained he was on a family trip to Disney World in Florida when Rush
was shot to death early on the morning of August 15, 1989, in a dispute
over stolen money. After years of reviewing documents and
re-interviewing witnesses as part of a joint investigation between his
attorneys and the Brooklyn district attorney's Conviction Review Unit, it was determined that the only evidence tying him to the crime was an alleged witness who later recanted her statement.
"As you can imagine,
after sitting in jail for 25 years for a crime he didn't commit, he
can't help but feel vindicated," said one of Fleming's lawyers, Anthony
Mayol. "On the flip side, that's 25 years that have been stolen, that
he'll never get back."
At his trial, defense
lawyers provided family photos and home videos of Fleming in Florida
around the time of Rush's killing. But according to Taylor Koss, another
of Fleming's lawyers, they did not have evidence he was in Florida on
the day of the slaying. The prosecution persuaded jurors to ignore the
alibi.
Fleming told his
attorneys he had paid a bill for phone calls made from his Florida hotel
room the night before Rush was killed, and he believed the receipt was
in his pocket when police arrested him. But authorities told the defense
he had no such receipt, according to Koss.
In the course of the
investigation, the Conviction Review Unit found the receipt in police
records, time stamped and dated -- solidifying Fleming's claim that he
was in Florida at the time of the killing, according to the district
attorney's office.
"This is proof of alibi that was basically purposely withheld," Koss said.
The review unit also
interviewed Fleming's former girlfriend, who said she called Fleming the
night of the killing while he was still at his hotel in Florida. The
investigation found her story to be credible, with phone records to
support it.
The prosecution also produced a witness who said she saw Fleming commit the crime.
According to Koss, the
woman recanted her testimony weeks after Fleming's conviction. She later
testified in front of a judge that she was on parole and had been
arrested with another woman for being in a stolen van the night of the
killing. She said police persuaded her to give a statement against
Fleming to avoid going back to jail.
Koss said the judge threw out her later testimony because she could not provide enough facts to back up her story.
A review unit search of
police records years later came up with a timeline. The woman on
probation was arrested with another woman on grand larceny charges and
brought to the Brooklyn district attorney's office, where she gave a
statement. Within the hour, the investigation found, charges against her
were dropped.
Koss said defense
investigators even found a witness in South Carolina who claims to have
been the getaway driver during Rush's killing and who even identified
someone they say is the real killer.
Judge Matthew D'Emic
Tuesday vacated the conviction after a "careful and thorough review of
this case, and based on key alibi facts that place Fleming in Florida at
the time of the murder," said District Attorney Ken Thompson.
Koss and Mayol say the next step is ensuring that Fleming has a way to support himself after he is released.
"He has no job, no career, no prospects," Koss said.
"We're suing everybody,
let's be honest," Koss added, saying Fleming's legal team intends to
bring a civil rights lawsuit against the city and seek reparations from
the state under a provision set up to redress wrongful convictions.
Thompson, who became
district attorney at the beginning of the year, has already released two
men who had been in prison for more than half their lives in connection
with three killings after DNA evidence tore holes in their convictions
in February.
Antonio Yarbough and
Sharrif Wilson were teenagers when they were imprisoned. But after
reviewing DNA evidence, Thompson said the previous convictions for the
1992 murders in Brooklyn would most likely not stand up in court and
agreed the two men should be freed.
Those cases, as well as
Fleming's, are not connected to investigations into Detective Louis
Scarcella, whose questionable tactics have led to a review of some 50
other cases, the district attorney's office said.
On Monday, Thompson
named Harvard law professor Ronald S. Sullivan, Jr. as special counsel
to the district attorney for the Conviction Review Unit. Sullivan, who
heads Harvard's Criminal Justice Institute, will guide the group in
future cases brought for review, according to the District Attorney's
office.

According to those that witnessed the accident, no lives were lost but the accident caused gridlock of traffic on the road.
When newsmen got to the scene of the incident, the content of the tanker were seen spilling into the drainage nearby while some policemen and LASTMA officials at the scene were seen questioning the driver of the tanker.

An attempt to get the tanker's plate number and the identity of the company that owns the tanker was futile as there was no name on the tanker and the policemen did not allow pictures to be taken.
A building material trader in the area, Azubuike Emmanuel, while commenting on the incident, questioned why the LASTMA officials at the scene are not telling them anything nor taking steps to stop the spillage.

Rihanna dismisses pregnancy rumours as she displays her washboard abs in a tiny bra top
She found herself at the centre of reports that she was expecting her first child last week.
But Rihanna has dismissed the pregnancy claims in the best way she knows how - by displaying her washboard abs.
The 26-year-old singer proved once and for all that she is not with child by wearing a white bra top which drew attention to her enviably flat stomach as she enjoyed a night out at The Supper Club in Hollywood on Tuesday night.
No bump here! Rihanna dismissed pregnancy
rumours once and for all as she displayed her washboard abs on a night
out at The Supper Club in Hollywood on Tuesday night
She teamed the bralet with a pair of low-slung and baggy studded jeans, a pink cropped boucle jacket and silver pointed heels.
Finishing off her look, Rihanna left her raven hair loose in tumbling curls, and clutched her mobile phone in her hand as she headed into the nightspot with friends.
Rihanna's outing came after a source was quoted as telling website Hollywood Life: 'Rihanna’s not pregnant with any body’s baby.
Flat as a pancake: Rihanna opted for a tiny white bra top and low-slung jeans to show off her flat stomach
Mix and match: Rihanna teamed her outfit with a cropped, pink, boucle jacket and pointed metallic heels
'Motherhood
is the last thing on her mind these days, like the last! She’s not in a
serious enough relationship to even discuss, let alone think about
having a child. Sorry, that’s not the case.'The rumours began when Rihanna, who is in a relationship with singer Drake, was spotted drinking decaffeinated coffee.
According to Mediatakeout.com Rihanna has given up smoking weed and she ‘refused to attend the official after party on Drake's tour because there would be too much alcohol and weed smoke there.’
Curly girl: Rihanna left her raven hair loose in tumbling curls for the outing
However, just because Rihanna is not pregnant right now does not mean that the singer can't see herself entering the world of motherhood at some point in the future.
The source added to Hollywood Life: 'One day, with the right man, at the right time she’d want to begin a family.
'She would be a good mother and love and spoil her kid rotten but she’s not ready yet.'
Donations pour in for Phoenix mom facing charges
A Phoenix
woman arrested after leaving her two kids in a hot vehicle during a job
interview is fighting to clear her name in court, with the support of a
New Jersey woman who has raised more than $91,000 to help her effort.
The
35-year-old wasn't able to find a sitter, so she left her 2-year-old
son and 6-month old baby in her Dodge Durango with the key still in the
ignition and the windows rolled down an inch.
A witness found the infant crying hysterically and sweating profusely as temperatures inside the SUV exceeded 100 degrees.Taylor was arrested after returning to the vehicle, and her tearful mugshot later caught the attention of 24-year-old Amanda Bishop of New Jersey.
Bishop said she was inspired to set up a fundraising web page for Taylor because she could relate to growing up in a family that doesn't have a lot of money.
"I had a mother and family in general who struggled raising us and had to rely on other resources to provide for us and sometimes made not the greatest choices," Bishop said.
Taylor pleaded not guilty Monday at her arraignment.
Prosecutors point out that her actions put the safety of her children in danger.
According to court documents, Scottsdale firefighters found the vehicle's windows rolled down only an inch and no running air conditioning to keep the children cool.
The baby was described as wearing a short-sleeve shirt over a long-sleeve shirt, as well as a blanket. Taylor arrived back at the vehicle more than an hour after her interview time, the documents said.
"Everything is focused on the mother and understandably so. It seems to be a very compelling human interest story," County Attorney Bill Montgomery said at a recent news conference. "But I'm equally concerned and compelled about the circumstances those two children were in."
Montgomery
said it's too soon to determine if Taylor will receive a prison term or
face losing custody of her children. Her offenses could amount to a
sentence ranging from probation to seven years in prison, prosecutors
said.
Neither Taylor nor her court-appointed attorney has responded to requests for comment.
Bishop
established the fundraising site on YouCaring.com with the goal of
raising $9,000. She was flabbergasted when the site reached the goal in
four days and then exceeded it by tens of thousands of dollars.
The
site also has received more than a thousand comments, some of which
accuse Bishop and other supporters of endorsing child abuse. Bishop said
Taylor should not be condemned for one bad decision.
"She
could have been at a bar or at a club and leaving her children in the
car," Bishop said. "Here's a woman who is an example of someone who is
trying — who is trying to better her situation and doing what she can to
provide for her children."
Former Aviation Minister, Fani Kayode Meets With President Jonathan After APC Diatribe - PM News, Lagos
Femi Fani-Kayode
By Ayorinde Oluokun
Fani Kayode who had in the past few months written a series of critical articles against the Jonathan administration, met with the President behind closed-doors at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday.
At the end of the meeting, the former Aviation minister refused to give details of his discussion with the President in an interview with State House correspondents after the visit.
“I won’t go into that,” was the curt reply of the former Aviation minister on his discussions with the President.
Fani Kayode also told journalists since the presidential villa houses the president of Nigeria, every Nigerian is entitled to pay a visit to the place from time to time
On his relationship with the President, Fani Kayode said: “I have always believed that every Nigerian regardless of the side of the political divide they belong, and as a Nigerian myself I have believed that we disagree on an issue from time to time, the most important thing is for us to be able to resolve these issues come together to move this country forward.”
He added that every right thinking and responsible person should be able to come to the villa from time to time and see how they can help to move the country forward.
He was however evasive on whether he is on his way out of APC affirming that he will make his position known at the appropriate time: “The step that I will take will be made known to Nigerians at the right time. The most important thing and I think you are fully aware of this is that I cannot and I will not be associated with a situation whereby any group of people is promoting a religion above another.”
“I think all of us have gone past the stage of religious politics in this country. We must treat the Muslim community with utmost respect and we must treat Christian community in the same way and even the non-religious,” added the former Minister.
Fani Kayode has of recent criticized the rumored attempt of APC to field former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari and former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, who are both Muslims as the presidential and vice presidential candidate in the impending 2015 general elections.
The former Aviation Minister argued that the party should instead present a Muslim and a Christian for the position.
